River Road South of Salem Closed Overnight Following Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash

On November 1st, 2020, at approximately 9:45 p.m., deputies were dispatched to a serious injury motor vehicle crash on River Road S near Vitae Springs Road S.  When emergency crews arrived on scene, they located a silver 2003 Dodge Neon down an embankment with three occupants inside.  Upon arrival, a female passenger in the vehicle was pronounced deceased.  The driver and one passenger from the vehicle were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The deceased passenger has been identified as Melissa Hunt, 23, of Monmouth.  The driver and surviving passenger sustained what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries during the crash.

Investigators from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office CRASH team were called to the scene.  The preliminary investigation revealed the Dodge Neon had been traveling southbound on River Road S prior to leaving the roadway, speed is believed to have been a contributing factor to the crash.

This is an ongoing investigation; no additional information is available for release at this time.
