Suspect Charged in Arson of Salem City Vehicles

Salem, Ore. — On January 10, 2021, two City of Salem vehicles were set on fire while they were parked at the Pringle Parkade located at 399 High ST SE. The damage to the vehicles is estimated at $45,000.

Several days later, Salem Police patrol officers contacted Matthew Terrance Mungenast, age 20 of Salem, and identified him as a possible suspect in the arson. During that contact he was subsequently arrested for unrelated crimes. The investigative leads were forwarded to detectives.

The follow up investigation done by detectives led the following charges against Mungenast on January 25:

  • Arson in the second degree
  • Unlawful entry into a motor vehicle, and
  • Criminal mischief in the first degree

Mungenast is currently being held at the Marion County Correctional Facility.
