Salem, Ore. — Newly constructed restrooms at Riverfront Park’s north meadow will be open starting Memorial Day weekend.

The new restroom facility is a priority project included in the Salem Riverfront Park Master Plan approved in 2018. The plan provides for the addition of new amenities to the 26-acre downtown park described by residents as “Salem’s Living Room.”

The new restroom building will include 8 individual unisex restrooms, including two restrooms meeting Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility requirements. The facility is located near the north meadow and existing Rotary Pavilion, across Front Street from Court Street. A Local Government Grant from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department helped fund the project. Total construction cost is right around $600,000.

Site work for the restroom building began in May 2020. Building construction began in October 2020. However, the project experienced delays resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected work schedules and slowed material production and delivery. Construction was also delayed by the hazardous air quality last September that resulted from the 2020 wildfires.

The restrooms will generally be open between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. every day and will be cleared before closing every night.
