Exchange of Gunfire Leads to Suspect and Salem Officer Shot

Salem, Ore. — At approximately 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, Salem Police Department detectives with the assistance of a tactical team were attempting to effect the arrest of a wanted juvenile male suspect. The suspect was sought for his involvement in the March 18 shooting at the Salem Center Mall and the June 13 shooting downtown in the parking lot next to Columbia Bank.

The suspect was contacted by officers at a vehicle parked in the 4900 block of Oak Park DR NE. The suspect produced a gun, and an exchange of gunfire ensued. He was shot and died at the scene.

The Salem Police Department does not release the names of juveniles in criminal cases.

One officer was shot, transported to Salem Health, and is expected to make a full recovery. The names and years of service of the involved Salem Police officers are:

  • Officer Brian Frazzini, 19 years
  • Officer Erick Hernandez, 14 years
  • Officer Ryan Morris, 20 years
  • Officer Adam Waite, 14 years

The Marion County Law Enforcement Officer Deadly Use of Force Plan under Senate Bill 111 has been initiated for this incident, and Oregon State Police will be conducting the primary investigation. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Keizer Police Department, and Marion County District Attorney’s office are on scene assisting with the investigation. All involved officers have been placed on administrative leave per department policy.
