Please use caution around the Willamette Slough at Minto Brown Island Park next week. Spraying to reduce Ludwigia growth in the slough will be from July 18 to July 22. The treatment is expected to be more effective at this stage of the plant’s growth.
Areas near spraying will be posted as closed as a precaution during the treatment period. Precautions, such closing a broader area then than treatment area and using a focused sprayer (as opposed to broadcast spraying) reduce the risk of park patrons’ exposure. In addition, treatment will be stopped if wind speeds increase above a certain threshold that would cause the herbicide to drift away from the target plants. The risk of people inhaling the herbicide from the trail are very low.
Treatment will begin at the mouth of the slough on July 18, and Willamette Riverkeeper will have staff and interns at Riverfront Park that day to conduct outreach and answer questions about the project.
