On Sunday, June 11, 2023, at approximately 3:51 P.M., the Oregon State Police responded to a multi-vehicle crash on Hwy 22, near milepost 60, in Marion County.

The preliminary investigation indicated a blue Honda Civic, operated by Alberto Avila-Perez (41) of Salem, was traveling westbound on Hwy 22 near milepost 60 when it lost control, departed the roadway wide and hit a boulder. The collision caused the Honda to overturn and cross the centerline into oncoming traffic where it clipped a cargo trailer being towed by a red Hyundai, operated by Randall Pefferle (70) of Bend, and then crashed head on into a black Subaru Forester, operated by Amella Hennig (70) of Salem.

The operator of the Honda (Avila-Perez) was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The passenger of the Honda, Jorge Alejandro Avila-Perez (42) of Salem, was transported with non life threatening injuries. No other people were injured.

The operator of the Hyundai (Pefferle) was not injured.

The roadway was impacted for approximately 4 hours during the on-scene investigation.  Speed is suspected as a contributor to the crash.

OSP was assisted by the Idanha Fire Department, the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, and ODOT.
