Wildfire Alert from Salem Fire: Level 3 – GO NOW -Update

Posted on August 23, 2023

The following is a Joint Press Release regarding the “Liberty Fire” from Salem Fire Department and Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

On August 23, 2023, at 2:48 PM, Salem Fire Department received a dispatch report of a grass fire in the 6300 block of Liberty Rd S, Salem, just north of Jory Hill Rd S.  The fire quickly spread to a two alarm and crews from Salem Fire Department, Keizer Fire, Polk County Fire, Turner Fire, Jefferson Fire, Stayton Fire, and Marion County fire responded.  Air units were quickly called in for assistance and attacked the fire from the air. Unified command was set up at Crossler middle school at approximately 3:45 PM and shortly after an evacuation point was set up at nearby Judson Middle School for residences and in the same area for livestock animals as well.

Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies along with Salem Police began working to evacuate area residences threatened by the fire.  At approximately 7:15 PM, air crews were able to contain the fire. We have received an update the evacuation notice has been lifted and residents are able to return home.  Fire patrols will remain in the area throughout the evening and tomorrow monitoring the terrain, fire behavior and weather activity.

Our evacuation levels are as follows:

  • Level 2: BE SET to evacuate. You must prepare to leave at a moment’s notice. This level indicates there is significant danger to your area, and residents should either voluntarily relocate to a shelter or with family and friends outside of the affected area, or if choosing to remain, to be ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice. Residents MAY have time to gather necessary items, but doing so is at their own risk. This may be the only notice you receive. Emergency services cannot guarantee that they will be able to notify you if conditions rapidly deteriorate. Area media services will be asked to broadcast periodic updates.  The level 2 evacuation is now in place for Liberty Rd S and Jory Hill Rd S west to Skyline Rd S

  • Level 1: BE READY for potential evacuation. You should be aware of the danger that exists in the area, monitor emergency services websites and local media outlets for information. This is the time for preparation and precautionary movements of persons with special needs, mobile property, and (under certain circumstances) pets and livestock. If conditions worsen, emergency services personnel may contact you via an emergency notification system.  Level 1 evacuation is now in place for Liberty Rd S / Bates Rd S to Cole Rd S and includes Old Liberty Rd S.
