Salem, Ore – On Wednesday, October 18th, 2023, an overflow of raw sewage was reported at approximately 3:00 p.m. located near 4937 Verda Lane NE, Unit 302. The overflow resulted from a blockage in the sewer line. Approximately 1350 gallons of raw sewage were spilled at the site and possibly entered Claggett Creek. Public Works Department’s Environmental Services crews were immediately dispatched to the site and cleared the blockage by 4:00 p.m. Staff has posted signs warning residents to stay out of the creek and avoid any contact with the waterway. Staff will continue to take water samples and any bacteria that entered the site should be flushed out of the water body in the next few days.

If you see an overflowing manhole or wish to report a spill, please call the Public Works Department Dispatch Center at 503-588-6333.

Everyone can do their part to prevent sewer backups and overflows by keeping sewers free of fats, oils, rags, and grease. Learn more about Sanitary Sewer Overflows and the steps taken by the City of Salem to reduce these events.
