Salem Adds New Internet Domain: Salemor.gov

Posted on August 18, 2024

You may soon notice a change in some of our web addresses. We’ve added “salemor.gov” to our list of City of Salem domain names. The new domain doesn’t replace cityofsalem.net, instead, it will be used to provide shorter links to some of our web pages that otherwise have long addresses. These short addresses can be easier to remember or to include on signs or social media.

.Gov domains also provide an element of security that other domains don’t have. For a fee, anyone can register a .com, .org or .us domain. This can make it hard for the public know to if the people behind an online service are who they claim to be.

.Gov domains are managed by the federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, which verifies the identity of anyone who requests a .gov domain. .Gov domains are a free service of the federal government.

Here’s an example of a short link for our “Connect with Us” webpage: https://salemor.gov/connect. The related QR code is pictured.
