Salem City Council Considers Changes to Water and Sewer Fees

The Council has had a long-standing commitment to provide adequate funding for utility service. The Utility Fund is separate from the General Fund. It is generated by mostly by utility payments and provides for basic utility system needs. These needs include clean drinking water, wastewater treatment, flood mitigation and maintaining enough pressure and water storage for fire protection.

In other City business, the Council will:

  • Hear the Fiscal Year 2025 first quarter financial report.
  • Hear an update on Salem’s Cyanotoxin Preparedness and results of drinking water treatment processes during the 2024 algae season.
  • Consider adopting a new Solid Waste Management Policy and recognizing the need for future modification to include policy statements related to the City’s Climate Action Plan.
  • Hear testimony about a decision approving a Conditional Use Permit to allow motor vehicle service on property at 3393 Silverton Road NE.
  • Consider a motion from Mayor Chris Hoy to adjust the City Manager’s compensation to make it more competitive with similarly sized cities.
  • Consider a motion regarding compliance with Section 62 of the Salem Charter regarding ethical standards for decision-making.
