Starting next summer, it won’t be free to park on streets in downtown Salem. According to the Salem Reporter, the city of Salem has been working for years on plans to end free downtown parking. It’s supposed to encourage use of parkades, fund security improvements and allow the phase-out of a business tax downtown that currently pays for parking infrastructure.
City councilors approved the move last year. Now, city officials have set a target date of July 2025 and are surveying people about how they park downtown and related issues to guide the rollout.
The survey is open here.
