City of Salem Initiates its First Bike Box

Posted on December 15, 2024

The City of Salem has installed its first bike box at the intersection of Liberty and Trade Streets NE as part of efforts to create a safe and interconnected biking network. This addition is designed to make commuting safer and easier for bicyclists and drivers.

Remember:
For Bicyclists:
– Enter the bike box from the bike lane and stop ahead of cars.
– Position yourself to turn or go straight while being clearly visible to drivers.

For Drivers:
– Stop behind the green bike box at a red light.
– Do not enter the box until the light turns green and bicyclists clear the intersection.

Look for Green Markings!
Whenever you see green pavement, it highlights areas where bikes and cars might cross paths. These markings are designed to keep everyone alert and safe.

This project is part of the 2022 Safety and Livability Bond passed by the voters.
