Man Lying on Tracks Killed by Passing Train in Salem

Salem, Ore. — At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 15, emergency responders were called to the railroad tracks near the intersection of 22nd ST & Claxter RD NE due to a collision involving a train and an individual on the tracks.

A Union Pacific rail crew traveling northbound and approaching Hyacinth ST NE reported what appeared to be a person lying on the tracks. The train crew sounded the horn repeatedly and used emergency measures but could not avoid the collision.

Samuel Lewis Hecocta, age 35 of Salem, was declared deceased at the scene.

The death investigation was completed, and the train released to continue its route by about 5 p.m.
