The City of Salem announced that an overflow of untreated sewage occurred into Waln Creek on February 23, 2025, at approximately 12:00 pm near 5225 Lone Oak Rd SE. The overflow was caused by a blockage in the sewer line. City utility crews were immediately dispatched to the location and cleared the blockage by 3:20 pm. Approximately 2,010 gallons of untreated sewage were spilled.
Signs have been placed to warn residents to avoid water contact in Waln Creek due to potentially high levels of bacteria. Water quality samples are being taken and will continue to be taken until the results indicate that the issue has been cleared. Any bacteria that entered the site should be flushed out of the water body in the next few days.
