The Oregon Senate approved a bill Thursday aimed at making Portland more competitive in its bid to bring major league baseball to the waterfront. The Statesman Journal reports that Senate Bill 110 would facilitate up to $800 million in bonds to support the construction of a new stadium. The proposed funding to pay off the bonds would come through a “jock tax,” or income taxes from members and employees of a Major League Baseball team playing in Oregon. The bill was approved with a 24-5 vote and now moves to the House for consideration.
