Geer Community Park in Salem Upgrades Moving Forward, But Facilities Still Closed

Posted on August 16, 2025

SALEM, Ore. – Construction crews are making steady progress on a series of upgrades at Geer Community Park, but most of the site remains closed as work continues. New features will not be ready for public use until later this year or next spring.

The improvements, part of a broader effort to enhance Salem’s community parks, include:

  • A new skatepark designed by Evergreen Skateparks of Portland, with upgraded pathways.

  • A fenced dog park with separate areas for active and quieter dogs, an accessible paved entry, and two covered bench areas.

  • Rebuilt soccer fields with new grading, irrigation, and drainage.

  • Upgraded baseball fields with artificial turf infields to support both baseball and softball and extend the playing season.

  • Reservable picnic shelters located near the skatepark and dog park.

This week, contractors are making significant progress on the baseball and soccer fields. Seeding for the soccer fields is expected in late September to allow grass to establish before winter.

A related project will add a sidewalk along Park Avenue NE and a pedestrian crossing, connecting nearby neighborhoods through the Oregon State Hospital campus and into Geer Park. Once complete, it will link to new skatepark pathways, creating a continuous walking route.

Project Partners and Funding
Most of the work is being completed by Oregon-based contractors. Paul Brothers, Inc. of Boring is leading the skatepark and pathway construction, while Pihl, Inc. of Banks is handling the soccer fields, dog park, one picnic shelter, and sidewalk improvements. FieldTurf Tarkett is installing the artificial turf.

The voter-approved 2022 Safety and Livability Bond is funding the soccer fields, dog park, and nearby picnic shelter. The Park System Development Charge Fund is covering most of the skatepark, related trails, and sidewalk upgrades, along with a $500,000 grant from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. Artificial turf for the baseball fields is funded through a combination of bond dollars and development charges. No City General Fund money is being used.

Timeline

  • Skatepark: Expected to open late 2025.

  • Fields: Closed until mid-spring 2026 to allow for grass growth and field preparation.

  • Sidewalk and Crossing: Construction will proceed as weather and schedules allow.
