ODF Promotes Hidden State Forest Campgrounds for Labor Day Getaways

Posted on August 27, 2025

SALEM, Ore. — As Labor Day weekend approaches, the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) is encouraging Oregonians to skip the crowded parks and discover quieter state forest campgrounds, including Northrup Creek Horse Camp in the Clatsop State Forest.

While many high-traffic destinations have long been booked, ODF notes that several equestrian-friendly campgrounds still have availability — and they welcome visitors even without horses. These sites offer a chance to unplug, unwind, and connect with Oregon’s outdoors while supporting sustainable recreation.

“Oregon’s state forests are spaces for everyone,” said Joe Offer, ODF’s Recreation, Education, and Interpretation Program Manager. “Whether you’re camping, hiking, riding horses, or just enjoying the trees, you’ll find a place for you in Oregon’s forests, our common ground.”

Northrup Creek Horse Camp, tucked within the Clatsop State Forest, features eight campsites with corrals, space for trailers, and three drive-up tent sites. Non-equestrian campers are welcome at several sites, making it a peaceful option for families, hikers, and trail runners. Amenities include vault toilets, a hand-pump water source, and trail access directly from camp.

Other under-the-radar options include Santiam Horse Camp in the Santiam State Forest, and Stagecoach and Reehers Camp Horse Camps in the Tillamook State Forest — all providing trail access, rustic amenities, and quieter alternatives to crowded parks.

Reservations are required, and sites remain available for the holiday weekend through ReserveAmerica. For a full list of state forest recreation areas, visit ODF’s Recreation, Interpretation and Education website.
