Heading Off to College? Don’t Forget to Review Your Insurance Coverage

Posted on September 3, 2025

As Oregon students pack up and head off to college, families are juggling excitement with a fair share of nerves. One way to ease the stress: making sure your insurance coverage is in order. The Oregon Division of Financial Regulation (DFR) reminds parents and students that the right insurance policies can prevent financial setbacks and provide peace of mind during this new chapter.

Homeowner and Renters Insurance

Students living in dorms are often covered under their parents’ homeowners policy. This can protect personal property like laptops and electronics, though families should confirm coverage details with their insurance agent. Keeping receipts for new purchases is recommended.

For students renting off campus, renters insurance is a smart choice. It covers personal belongings and provides liability protection if accidents occur. Premiums are typically affordable and depend on the unit and possessions. DFR also advises creating a home inventory list to simplify future claims.

Auto Insurance

Oregon law requires auto liability coverage for all vehicles. If a car is titled in a student’s name, they’ll need their own policy. Students driving a family-owned vehicle can usually remain on their parents’ policy but must be listed as a driver. Families should update their insurer with the vehicle’s college address if different from the policy.

Health Insurance

Students have several options for health coverage. Dependent coverage under a family plan remains available until age 26, though HMO members may face limits on out-of-area care. Many colleges also offer their own student health plans with varying costs and benefits. Families should check with the campus health center for details.

If Claims Are Denied

In the event of a denied claim or settlement dispute, Oregonians can file a complaint with the DFR. Advocates are available to answer questions at 888-877-4894 or by email at dfr.insurancehelp@dcbs.oregon.gov. Resources are also available at dfr.oregon.gov.
