On September 29, 2025, deputies responded to a serious single-vehicle crash near the 7200 block of St. Louis Road NE, outside of Gervais. The crash involved a black Ford Ranger pickup that rolled and sustained major damage.
Three passengers were injured in the crash. One passenger, Juan Garibo, 27, of Salem, was transported by Life Flight but later died at Salem Hospital. Another victim sustained a broken neck, and a third required stitches for a leg injury.
Deputies identified the driver as Wilfrido Giron-Cortes Jr., 33, of Woodburn. Investigators determined Giron-Cortes had been drinking alcohol before the crash. His blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit. Deputies also located multiple open containers of alcohol inside the vehicle.
On October 2, 2025, Giron-Cortes was arrested and lodged at the Marion County Jail on the following charges:
- Manslaughter I
- Assault II
- Assault IV
- DUII
- Recklessly Endangering
- Reckless Driving
Giron-Cortes is scheduled for arraignment at the Marion County Court Annex on October 3, 2025, at 2:30 p.m.
