Oregon Proclaims Oct. 16–19 as Earthquake Preparedness Days

Posted on October 2, 2025

(Salem, Ore.) – Governor Tina Kotek has issued a proclamation designating October 16–19, 2025, as a time for earthquake preparedness and resilience across Oregon. The proclamation highlights two statewide initiatives led by the Oregon Department of Emergency Management (OEM): the Great Oregon ShakeOut and the Great Oregon Camp-In.

On Thursday, Oct. 16, at 10:16 a.m., Oregonians are encouraged to join millions worldwide in the annual ShakeOut earthquake drill by practicing the lifesaving action of “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.” The exercise is open to schools, workplaces, and households statewide. Research shows this method provides the best immediate protection against falling debris, collapsing ceilings, and shattering glass during an earthquake.

“The ShakeOut is more than a drill—it’s a reminder that preparedness saves lives,” said Erin McMahon, OEM director. “By practicing together, we build a culture of resilience that helps our communities respond more effectively when disaster strikes.”

Following the ShakeOut, OEM invites families to participate in the Great Oregon Camp-In from Oct. 17–19. The event encourages households to simulate life after a disaster by using alternative cooking methods, reviewing emergency plans, and testing survival supplies. Activities can last a few hours or an entire weekend.

“The Camp-In is a chance to turn preparedness into a hands-on experience,” said Kayla Thompson, OEM’s Community Preparedness Coordinator. “Preparedness should be empowering—and even fun—for the whole family.”

To support youth engagement, new educational video games Cascadia 9.1 and Cascadia 9.2 are available at Cascadia9game.org, designed to inspire young adults to take action before the next big quake.

OEM is also hosting a Ready Fair on Saturday, Oct. 11, featuring preparedness workshops, family-friendly activities, food trucks, and a chance to win a fully stocked emergency go-bag.
