37-year-old Joseph Wirkkala was arraigned yesterday in the August 27 fatal shooting at Wallace Marine Park. Salem Police say in the early morning hours of August 27, 2025, they responded to a report of gunfire near the gravel pit area of Wallace Marine Park. 60-year-old Jacob Collazo of Salem, was found with multiple gunshot wounds and later died at the hospital. Joseph Wirkkala, who was on transitional leave from prison and had an active warrant, was identified as the suspect shortly after the incident. With the assistance of the Salem Police SWAT Team, he was located and taken into custody later that same day. The investigation revealed the shooting followed a domestic violence incident involving Wirkkala and another person living in Wallace Marine Park. Yesterday, Wirkkala was arraigned for the crimes of murder, attempted murder, assault, attempted assault, unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, reckless endangering, and felon in possession of a weapon.
