Historic Features Grant Revives SalemDowntown Charm

Posted on February 1, 2026

The City of Salem’s Urban Development Department, in partnership with Planning and the Historic Landmarks Commission (HLC), reinstated the Missing Historic Features Grant in 2024. Originally approved in 2003, this grant is funded by the Riverfront Downtown Urban Renewal Area Capital Improvement Grant Program. The program aims to restore historic elements that enhance Salem’s architectural character and community appeal.

Elsinore Theatre Receives Funding

The HLC selected three projects for funding based on their historic significance, community benefit, and feasibility. The Elsinore Theatre was awarded $92,000 to recreate its iconic 1928 blade sign and architectural crown. These improvements, which cost $187,000 in total, restore key features of the theater’s historic charm. The new additions were unveiled during a public event on September 12, 2025, celebrating the preservation of Salem’s cultural heritage.
