Parents, students and community members voiced opposition to a proposal to close six Salem-Keizer elementary schools during a school board meeting Tuesday, October 13, putting community concerns at the center of a decision that could reshape neighborhood schools in 2027.

According to the Salem Reporter’s account of the meeting, more than 30 people spoke during public comment, and all opposed the closure plan.

The district has recommended closing Brush College, Candalaria, Cummings, Englewood, Liberty and Richmond elementary schools. The proposal is intended to address declining enrollment, according to reporting by Oregon Public Broadcasting.

Closures would begin in fall 2027 under the proposal

The district’s current plan calls for the six schools to close in fall 2027, with attendance boundary changes to follow. Those boundary changes could affect families whose children would be reassigned to different schools.

District officials have said the proposal is part of a broader effort to address enrollment and school facility needs. The final outcome, however, depends on the school board’s decision-making process.

What happens next?

The school board is scheduled to discuss the proposal again on Tuesday, October 20. A final decision on the proposed closures is planned for December 8, according to OPB’s reporting.

Families should follow official district announcements for updates to the timeline, school assignments, transportation and opportunities to participate in the process.

For parents and students, the stakes extend beyond buildings. School closures can affect travel times, neighborhood connections, transportation arrangements and the transition students experience when moving to a different school.

The district’s decision will determine how those concerns are weighed alongside enrollment, facilities and educational priorities.
