Oregon to Receive Federal Election Monitors Ahead of November 3 Election

Posted on October 29, 2026

Federal election monitors are expected to observe ballot processing in Multnomah County on Election Day, November 3, as Oregon prepares for the upcoming election.

The U.S. Department of Justice notified Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read’s office that federal monitors would be deployed to observe election operations in Multnomah County. The announcement is part of a broader nationwide monitoring effort.

State officials have emphasized that federal observers must follow Oregon’s election rules and do not receive special authority to access restricted election facilities, handle ballots or inspect voting equipment.

The deployment does not mean Marion County has been notified of a similar federal monitoring presence, according to reporting available October 28.

Marion County already has rules governing election observers. Those requirements include signing in, wearing identification, remaining in assigned locations and maintaining distance from election workers. Observers are prohibited from handling ballots or interacting with staff while observing election processes.

Secretary of State Tobias Read has said federal monitors must follow the same rules as other observers.

Oregon voters should also pay attention to ballot-return deadlines. According to state election guidance reported this week, ballots must be received by 8 p.m. November 3 or postmarked by Election Day under the applicable rules. Voters are encouraged to use official ballot drop boxes when possible.
