SALEM, Ore. — Marion County is honoring local veterans and military families this week by taking part in the sixth annual Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide effort recognizing the service and sacrifices of military veterans.
The Marion County Board of Commissioners recognized veterans during Wednesday’s Board Session, expressing appreciation for their service and the contributions they have made to the community.
Operation Green Light runs November 4 through November 11, leading up to Veterans Day. As part of the annual observance, Marion County buildings will be illuminated in green as a visible symbol of support for veterans and their families.
“Operation Green Light is a simple way to send a powerful message: we will always stand for our veterans,” said Commissioner Colm Willis, Board Chair. He encouraged neighborhoods throughout Marion County to join the effort by displaying green lights.
County officials are also asking residents, businesses, cities and community organizations to participate by placing green lights in their homes, storefronts and offices. Even something as simple as changing a porch light to green can serve as a reminder that veterans are appreciated and supported by their communities.
Commissioner Danielle Bethell encouraged residents to turn on a green light this week and take time to personally thank a veteran for their service.
Marion County is also recognized as a Purple Heart County and provides resources and support for veterans. A list of available veterans services and resources can be found on the county’s website.
Commissioner Kevin Cameron said the green lights represent a small but meaningful gesture that reminds veterans their community stands behind them.
Operation Green Light is led nationally by the National Association of Counties and takes place each year during the week leading up to Veterans Day.
Residents are encouraged to leave their green lights shining through November 11 in recognition of those who have served.
