SALEM, Ore. — Local organizations are looking for volunteers to help operate warming shelters in the Salem area as colder weather approaches and temperatures begin to create dangerous conditions for people experiencing homelessness. The Salem Reporter provided the following list:
The Mid-Willamette Valley Community Action Agency is seeking community members willing to help staff warming shelters in Salem and Dallas during periods of freezing temperatures.
Warming shelters provide a place for people without reliable housing to escape dangerous cold, receive food and find a safe place to spend the night.
One of Salem’s established warming locations is Salem First Presbyterian Church at 770 Chemeketa Street NE. The church operates a shelter in its basement when temperatures fall below freezing.
Organizers say volunteers are an important part of keeping the shelters operating and making sure people have access to protection during severe winter weather.
Exposure to freezing temperatures can lead to hypothermia and other potentially life-threatening conditions, particularly for people who must remain outdoors overnight.
The need for volunteers increases as the region moves into the colder months. Community members interested in helping are encouraged to contact the Mid-Willamette Valley Community Action Agency for information about volunteer opportunities and shelter operations.
The agency coordinates services intended to assist low-income residents and people experiencing housing instability throughout the Mid-Willamette Valley.
