SALEM – To honor America and its veterans on Armed Forces Day, the B-17 Alliance aircraft restoration project will host a military salute with a ceremony, displays and activities at Salem’s historic McNary Field, on Sat., May 16 from 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The public is invited to this fundraiser to visit and tour the B-17 bomber’s restoration hangar and museum to see and learn about the history of the B-17, “Lacey Lady,” and observe the progress being made in restoring her to fly again.
There will be a special patriotic and flag ceremony at 1 p.m. featuring area veterans’ groups, an Army National Guard guest speaker, and veterans from many eras. Also, there will be military vehicle and vintage vehicle displays, riveter’s demonstrations, meet WWII B-17 pilot Dick Nelms, military author’s book signings, the B-17 Alliance Museum and PX, tours, prize drawings, a BBQ lunch, and many photo opportunities.
Established in 1949, Armed Forces Day is a day to honor and acknowledge Americans in all six branches of the U.S. armed forces. Terry Scott, B-17 Alliance executive director, said it’s also a day that reminds us of the strength and unity of all who serve under one flag.
“At the B-17 Alliance, we proudly continue that tradition—celebrating service, community, and the enduring American Spirit that fuels our mission,” she said. “We want people to visit this historic aircraft project to see how we’re preserving World War II history and join our Victory Unit members, veterans, and supporters to recognize the sacrifices made for our freedom.”
Admission is $25 for this fund raiser. Families and children will be allowed free entry with any membership. Current members cost $15. Veterans receive a one-year free membership. Also, only certified service animals will be allowed to enter.
