Happy October! Denise and Hunter kicked off the first day of the month with everything from International Coffee Day and pumpkin spice to the much more consequential story dominating Oregon politics: tonight’s first 2026 gubernatorial debate between Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek and Republican state Sen. Christine Drazan.
The debate begins at 6 p.m. in Eugene, and with recent polling showing the race statistically tied, we talked about what each candidate needs to explain to Oregon voters. For Kotek, that includes affordability, housing and homelessness, education and the direction of the state. For Drazan, voters can listen for specifics about what she would change and how she would accomplish those goals within Oregon’s existing political structure.
Rather than obsessing over who “wins” tonight, we’ll be listening for specificity: What exactly would either woman change, and can she realistically accomplish it?
That led to a broader conversation about how two voters can look at the same state, agree that things aren’t going particularly well, and still reach completely different conclusions about which political party presents the greater risk. Party identity, perceptions of personal freedom, national politics and differing priorities can all shape how voters interpret the same conditions.
Then we lightened things up with memories of first jobs and first paychecks. Denise remembered babysitting for a whopping $1 an hour as a young teenager in Plymouth, New Hampshire, graduating to bussing tables at the Ye Welcome Inn, and later picking strawberries after moving to Oregon at 15. That strawberry season temporarily cured her desire to ever eat another strawberry—but thankfully, she eventually recovered. 😂
Hunter, being about a decade younger, remembers considerably bigger paychecks from his first jobs—but the stories had something important in common: you worked, you earned your own money, and you were proud of it. Different generations and different wages, but the same strong work ethic.
And Denise still remembers what some of that first hard-earned money bought: a bright red satin baseball jacket and a pair of Levi’s from Ames Department Store. When it’s your own money for the first time, you feel rich!
Before wrapping up, we previewed a busy week ahead on Newsmakers at Noon: Jane and Daylee from Willamette Valley Bank with the Community Calendar, Salem Mayor Julie Hoy, Dean Sweeney promoting the Rodeo of Champions, and Jeff Reynolds from Restoration News.
