Salem School Closures: Parents Push Back, and Oregon’s Final Governor Debate – Newsmakers At Noon 10/14/26

Posted on October 14, 2026

It was a packed agenda on today’s Newsmakers at Noon, with two big stories raising questions about leadership, accountability, and the future of Oregon.

First up: Salem-Keizer’s controversial proposal to close six elementary schools. Denise and Hunter recapped Tuesday night’s school board meeting, where parents, students, and community members turned out to challenge the district’s plans.

Superintendent Andrea Castañeda pointed to declining enrollment and millions in lost state funding. But many parents came prepared with facts, figures, petitions, and pointed questions about the district’s priorities.

Why are some of the district’s highest-performing schools on the chopping block? What about millions already invested in school improvements? And what happened to promises made during the 2018 bond campaign?

We highlighted some particularly impressive testimony, including students who spoke passionately about their schools and parents who challenged the district’s numbers. One message stood out: “We are not numbers on a spreadsheet.”

The next community listening session is tonight at Leslie Middle School, from 6–7:30 p.m. The school board’s closure vote is scheduled for December 8.

Then we turned to Oregon’s final gubernatorial debate.

Governor Tina Kotek and Republican challenger Christine Drazan squared off in Bend Tuesday night, covering housing, homelessness, taxes, rural Oregon, and water rights.

Denise shared her impressions of the candidates’ contrasting styles. Drazan’s conversational approach and willingness to challenge Kotek’s record stood out, while Kotek returned to familiar campaign arguments involving Donald Trump and abortion.

Our takeaway? Not much new policy ground was covered, but the debate offered voters another opportunity to compare two very different approaches to governing Oregon.

With ballots arriving and Election Day approaching, the stakes couldn’t be higher – both for Oregon’s next governor and for the local decisions affecting our neighborhoods and schools.
