Christine Drazan on School Closures, Academic Achievement & Her Plan for Oregon – Newsmakers At Noon 10/28/26

Posted on October 28, 2026

With Election Day just six days away, today’s Newsmakers at Noon featured an important conversation with Oregon Republican gubernatorial candidate Christine Drazan, along with a discussion about the future of the Polk County Fairgrounds and several issues affecting Oregon voters.

Christine Drazan: Education, Accountability & Oregon’s Future

Christine Drazan joined Denise and Hunter to discuss her vision for Oregon and the changes she hopes to pursue as governor.

A major focus of our conversation was education, particularly the Salem-Keizer School District’s proposal to close six elementary schools, including some of its highest-performing schools.

We asked Drazan about the proposed closures, the importance of academic achievement, and what role student performance should play when districts make decisions that directly affect children, families, and neighborhoods.

With recent Salem-Keizer assessment results raising concerns about reading and math proficiency, we also explored the need for stronger academic outcomes, accountability, and a greater focus on classroom success.

How do we improve student achievement while considering the closure of schools that are already demonstrating academic success?

We also discussed Drazan’s plan for Oregon, including her priorities for affordability, education, public safety, and government accountability. Another important question: How much can a Republican governor accomplish without corresponding changes in the Legislature?

Drazan also addressed the challenges facing Oregon and shared her message to voters as the November 3 election approaches.

Whether you’re concerned about school closures, academic performance, or Oregon’s overall direction, this is a conversation worth hearing!

Kelly Tynon: The Future of the Polk County Fairgrounds

Earlier in the show, we welcomed Kelly Tynon of Friends of the Polk County Fair to discuss Measure 27-149, a proposed five-year operating levy intended to keep the Polk County Fairgrounds and Event Center in Rickreall open.

Facing financial challenges and significant maintenance needs, the fairgrounds could close at the end of the year if the measure fails, according to county officials.

Kelly explained what’s at stake, how the proposed levy would work, and what the fairgrounds mean to Polk County residents.

Oregon News & Election Updates

We also covered the Salem-Keizer School Board’s latest meeting, concerns about student academic performance, and the growing opposition to proposed school closures.

Other topics included Oregon’s early ballot returns, reports of higher ballot rejection rates in rural communities following postal service changes, and a $250,000 settlement involving a former Salem-area school employee fired over a shirt depicting Ruby Bridges.

From the classroom to the governor’s office, today’s show focused on education, accountability, community priorities, and Oregon’s future.
