From Mao’s China to the American Dream: Solomon Yue’s Incredible Journey – Newsmakers At Noon 7/2/26

Posted on July 2, 2026

Today’s Newsmakers at Noon proved that live radio is all about being flexible! Our guests, Solomon Yue and Kerry McQuisten, joined us live while sitting in traffic on the West Salem Bridge. (Gee…if only we’d moved forward with that third bridge!) Despite the unexpected mobile studio, we enjoyed a fascinating conversation about their new book, Counterscript: A Personal and Political Memoir.

Solomon shared his remarkable journey from growing up during Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution, where his family was persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party, to escaping communist China, legally immigrating to the United States, becoming an American citizen, and eventually serving in leadership roles within the Republican National Committee.

We discussed how living under communism shaped Solomon’s deep appreciation for freedom, faith, and the U.S. Constitution, as well as the lessons he believes Americans should remember about socialism, communism, and protecting liberty.

Co-author Kerry McQuisten talked about the extensive research behind the memoir, why Solomon’s story needed to be told, and how the book combines personal history, political memoir, and an inside look at decades of Oregon and national Republican politics.

Our conversation also explored behind-the-scenes stories from presidential campaigns, grassroots organizing, internal Republican Party battles, U.S.-China relations, the ongoing influence of the Chinese Communist Party, and why Solomon remains optimistic about America’s future despite today’s challenges.

Whether you enjoy political history, immigration stories, or inspiring accounts of the American Dream, Counterscript offers a unique perspective from someone who has lived under both tyranny and freedom.
