Today’s Newsmakers at Noon covered a wide range of stories spanning local government, national politics, and the ongoing debate over fairness in women’s athletics.
We began with a recap of the Salem City Council’s data center meeting, where much of the public discussion focused less on the project itself and more on the tone of the meeting. We discussed concerns about the treatment of company representatives who attended to answer questions, the controversy surrounding non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), and why confidentiality agreements are a routine part of economic development negotiations. Denise and Hunter also shared their impressions that much of the opposition appeared driven by incomplete information, raising questions about how future discussions will unfold if emotion continues to outweigh facts.
The conversation then shifted to Dr. Anthony Fauci’s appearance before Congress. We discussed Senator Josh Hawley’s questioning, Fauci invoking the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times, and Senator Rand Paul’s decision to refer Fauci for possible Contempt of Congress charges. We also examined whether the hearing represented meaningful accountability or simply another round of political theater, along with the legal implications of President Biden’s pardon and whether it affects Fauci’s ability to invoke the Fifth Amendment.
We also looked back at Fauci’s unprecedented media presence during the COVID-19 pandemic, discussing reports that he conducted more than 1,700 interviews over two years and the role the media played in shaping the public narrative.
The show wrapped up with a discussion about the WNBA, where teenage girls attending a Seattle game with signs supporting Sophie Cunningham and Caitlin Clark and advocating for girls’ sports reportedly faced hostility from fans. Denise and Hunter talked about why they believe Cunningham and Clark have become important role models for young female athletes and what the controversy says about the current state of women’s sports.
