Today’s Newsmakers at Noon mixed some sad news with important conversations about Oregon’s kids, forests, education and the consequences of decades of public policy.
We remembered two entertainment legends following news of their deaths: Dolly Parton at 80 and actor Tim Curry at 80. Denise described Dolly as perhaps the last universally loved celebrity –an entertainer whose music, personality, generosity and love of country crossed cultural and political lines. And Tim Curry? From The Rocky Horror Picture Show to an unforgettable collection of characters over a legendary career…that one hurt, too. ☹
At 12:30, Cindy McLean joined us to introduce listeners to Hope Academy in The Dalles, which is making a big transition for the 2026–27 school year – from a homeschool co-op to a full private Christian school serving K4 through 8th grade. Hope Academy partners with families to provide strong academics alongside a Biblical foundation, with small classes, individual attention, character and leadership development, hands-on learning and an intentionally low-screen-time environment. The school operates on a four-day week and emphasizes a partnership between home, school and faith, nurturing a love of God, family, community and country. (Hope Academy)
It was an especially timely conversation as we also discussed the struggles facing Oregon students and criticism of Gov. Tina Kotek for rejecting another educational option. Parents want choices, and Hope Academy is an example of families and educators building an alternative that reflects their values and their vision for their children’s education.
We also returned to the decades-long saga of the northern spotted owl after Oregon State University researchers said the species is now “functionally extinct” in significant portions of its range. That prompted a much bigger conversation about the environmental policies adopted in the name of saving the owl, the collapse of much of Oregon’s timber economy, the devastating impact on rural communities, decades of litigation and restrictions on forest management—and the mega-wildfires now destroying forests and wildlife habitat alike. After all of that sacrifice, what was actually accomplished?
Oregon also landed on another list nobody wants to make, ranking among the least hard-working states in America, while reports of another increase in COVID cases – and some rather entertaining reactions in the comments – had us wondering whether we’re really prepared to start doing this all over again.
