Today’s Newsmakers at Noon covered everything from the first hint of fall and the return of football to some much bigger questions about Oregon’s future, affordability, education and the rapidly growing demand for AI infrastructure.
At 12:30, Lois Anderson, Executive Director of Oregon Right to Life, joined us to talk about the organization’s upcoming Gala fundraiser and its work supporting the pro-life movement in Oregon.
Politics turned to the governor’s race and a basic question: Is Oregon better off than it was four years ago? We discussed Christine Drazan’s newly released agenda focusing on affordability, housing, homelessness, education and government accountability, along with the broader debate over Oregon’s direction and whether another Kotek term could influence more residents to leave the state.
We also looked at a Salem Housing Authority proposal moving nine properties toward a transfer to Habitat for Humanity at 15% of market value, raising questions about the use of publicly held property and how Salem should approach affordable housing.
Then came AI and data centers. President Trump is urging communities to embrace AI infrastructure if America wants to remain competitive, while critics are raising concerns about the enormous energy demands. Oregon’s POWER Act adds another dimension: If a massive data center requires hundreds of millions of dollars in new electrical infrastructure, who should pay for it – the company creating the demand or everyone on the grid? That’s a debate that doesn’t necessarily break neatly along partisan lines.
And finally, something Oregon students will soon have to learn before graduating: personal finance! Beginning with graduates in 2027, new diploma requirements include financial education and higher education/career-path skills. We asked listeners: What’s the ONE financial skill every 18-year-old should understand? Credit cards? Compound interest? Mortgages? Taxes? Budgeting? Retirement?
