There may have been a little too much coffee involved in today’s Newsmakers at Noon – which seemed appropriate since it’s National Coffee Day. From there, Denise and Hunter bounced from history and Halloween nostalgia to politics, the economy, Seattle’s struggles and one deeply disturbing discovery lurking beneath the waters of the Pacific Northwest.
We had some fun remembering Halloween when we were kids – when costumes were simpler, neighborhoods were packed with trick-or-treaters and parents weren’t tracking their children by cellphone. We talked about how the holiday has changed over the years, along with a few of the traditions that seem to have disappeared or evolved.
Today’s trip through history included Benedict Arnold’s accomplice, the Nazi-Soviet division of Poland, the horrific 1941 massacre of Jews at Babi Yar near Kyiv, Willie Mays’ legendary 1954 catch, the debut of the Chevy Camaro, the 1982 Tylenol poisonings and the 777-point Dow plunge during the 2008 financial crisis.
We also looked ahead to Oregon’s first gubernatorial debate, with Gov. Tina Kotek and Sen. Christine Drazan scheduled to meet Thursday, Oct. 1. The debate runs from 6–7 p.m. and will be broadcast and streamed by KVAL. We also discussed political strategist Frank Luntz’s latest take on the midterms and what the national political environment could mean as Election Day approaches – without pretending anyone knows yet how voters will ultimately break.
On the economic front, Costco received $184 million in tariff refunds and says it reinvested most of that money into lower prices for members. And in Seattle, we talked about the startling sale price of an office tower near Amazon, along with a viral Nick Shirley video documenting fentanyl use on Seattle’s streets.
And then we discovered the sea spiders. Scientists have identified two new species in the Salish Sea – the first described there in nearly a century. One has red eyes, hairy-looking legs and comb-like appendages it uses to groom itself. The other is frequently covered in parasites. Yeah…NO!
