City of Salem Reports Sewer Overflow Event

Posted on September 22, 2019

The City of Salem announced that an overflow of raw sewage occurred on September 19 at approximately 2:12 PM, into Croisan Creek at 2525 Crestview Dr. S. The overflow resulted from a sanitary sewer pipe plugged with tree roots. Approximately 1575 gallons of raw sewage was spilled at the site. Public Works Department crews were immediately dispatched to the site and stopped the overflow at approximately 3:48 PM. Signs were posted warning people to avoid contact with the water in the pond at Minto Brown Island Park, receiving water from Croisan Creek, due to potentially high levels of bacteria. Any bacteria that entered the site should be flushed out of the water body in the next few days.

If you see an overflowing manhole or wish to report a spill, please call the Public Works Department Dispatch Center at 503-588-6311.
