Forest Service Waives Recreation Fees for National Get Outdoors Day

Posted on June 8, 2019

Portland, Ore. – The USDA Forest Service is waiving fees at day-use recreation sites in Oregon and Washington on Saturday, June 8 in recognition of National Get Outdoors Day.

National Get Outdoors Day celebrates America’s great outdoors and encourages families to visit their public lands, explore the natural world, and enjoy outdoor recreation activities.

“In the Pacific Northwest, we’re fortunate to enjoy an abundance of incredible outdoor recreation opportunities,” said Regional Forester Glenn Casamassa. “The Forest Service is proud to share in the stewardship of many of these special areas and support the multitude of benefits outdoor recreation provides. This Get Outdoors Day, and every day, I encourage you to get outdoors and enjoy your public lands!”

This fee waiver includes many picnic areas, boat launches, trailheads, and visitor centers. Concession operations will continue to charge fees unless the permit holder wishes to participate. Fees for camping, cabin rentals, heritage expeditions, or other permits still apply. No fees are charged at any time on 98 percent of national forests and grasslands, and approximately two-thirds of developed recreation sites in national forests and grasslands are available for use at no cost.

The Forest Service Pacific Northwest Region manages more than 2,400 developed recreation sites, over 24,000 miles of trails, 51 Wild and Scenic Rivers, and two national monuments. Each year, national forests in the Pacific Northwest receive over 15 million visitors, who spend over $730 million annually in communities near national forests. This spending supports over 6,000 year-long jobs, many in rural communities, and over $210 million in labor income for businesses and employees.
