Fire at Salem Housing Authority Property Displaces 14 Low-Income Seniors

Salem, Ore. — Robert Lindsey Tower, Salem Housing Authority’s low-income senior independent living community at 370 Church Street SE, caught fire this afternoon.  The fire has displaced 14 residents, with one resident in care of Salem Hospital.

Salem Fire was on scene within minutes of the 1:54 pm 9-1-1 call.  The fire started on the third floor of the apartment building and triggered the fire suppression system on both the second and third floors of the property.

The Salem Housing Authority is working with the Red Cross to relocate tenants who have been displaced by the fire. Robert Lindsey Tower has 62 units total spread across 11 floors.  Tenants on the remaining seven floors of the facility are currently sheltering in place until the building is evaluated by Salem Fire.  Salem Housing Authority staff is on scene with residents to ensure they are connected to resources and additional accommodations are being sourced.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
