Salem, Ore. — Salem Police responded to and investigated two separate shooting incidents overnight on Saturday, February 27, 2021.
Before midnight an officer parked in the area of Silverton RD and Lansing AV NE heard multiple gunshots, then witnessed two vehicles speeding past with one vehicle appearing to chase to the other.
The officer pursued and attempted a traffic stop on the second vehicle, but the driver continued to flee. Responding officers deployed spike strips successfully puncturing one tire, yet the driver did not stop. During the attempts to elude law enforcement, the passenger was seen throwing an object from the vehicle. The driver subsequently ceded to the officers at Cordon and Silverton RDS NE.
Patrol officers retrieved casings from the area where the original shots were heard, while a K-9 team recovered a firearm after an article search where the object was seen thrown. A search of the suspect vehicle yielded 80 grams of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, ammunition and a loaded magazine.
Driver, Jonathan Reyes Carranza, age 20 of Salem, and the male juvenile passenger were arrested and charged with the following:
- Theft I
- Unlawful manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance, methamphetamine
- Unlawful manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of school, methamphetamine
- Unlawful possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine
- Unlawful possession of a firearm
Reyes Carranza received an additional charge of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer. The Salem Police Department does not publish the names of juveniles arrested for criminal acts.
Reyes Carranza was lodged at the Marion County Jail, and the teen placed in custody of the Marion County Juvenile Detention Facility.
Second incident:
At approximately 11:30 p.m., patrol officers responded to the area of Wallace RD and Edgewater ST NW on the report of a shooting incident. Officers located a victim and rendered aid until paramedics arrived.
Detectives responded to the scene and are actively investigating the crime. No further details are available currently.
