City of Salem – 08/16/21 1:30 PM
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 16, 2021, Salem, ORE. The City of Salem will close Cascades Gateway Park to the public on August 19, 2021, at 5 p.m. for extensive restoration and landscaping. The closure impacts all 100 acres of the urban park including, the natural trail systems and developed footpaths, fishing area, fenced dog park, disc golf course, picnic areas, and playground equipment.
In the last year, Cascades Gateway Park has hosted an unusually high number of people. The increased vehicle and foot traffic in combination with the City’s temporary overnight camping allowance during the onset of the COVID 19 pandemic, has left many parts of the public park worn and eroded.
Closing the park to the public will allow City crews to schedule ongoing cleaning, roadway/ parking lot repair, and major landscaping work.
All park entrances including the main gate will be closed, preventing foot or vehicle traffic from entering. City Staff and Salem Police Officers will maintain regular rounds, address unauthorized visitors, and monitor the park closure compliance.
After the park is cleaned and minor restoration and rejuvenation work is complete, the City will re-open the park to the public. Major restoration projects will be scheduled in the coming year. No set date for re-opening has been determined at this time.
Cascades Gateway Park is one of 90 public parks in Salem maintained by our City crews and strong volunteer network. Learn more about Salem’s Public Park System on our website or email: ksandrecreation@cityofsalem.net“>parksandrecreation@cityofsalem.net
