Silverton Fire District Responds to Brush Fire on Abiqua Road

Posted on August 10, 2023

On 08/08/2023 at approximately 3:00pm the Silverton Fire District responded to report of a brush fire near the 18000 block of Abiqua Rd NE. The first arriving units discovered a large field fire that was spreading into timber with several structures threatened. Due to the size and complexity of the fire a second and third alarm was quickly requested.  After an aggressive fire attack the blaze was contained at approximately 10 acres.

The Silverton Fire District was assisted by Monitor Fire District, Hubbard Fire District, Drakes Crossing Fire District, Marion County Fire District, Molalla Fire District, Oregon Department of Forestry, Woodburn Fire District, Mt. Angel Fire District, Keizer Fire District and the Marion County Sherriff’s Office. No firefighter or civilian injuries occurred.

Though the cause of the fire has not been determined yet by investigators, the Silverton Fire District would like to remind all community members to use extreme caution with any spark-emitting activity or burning material/debris, especially during the recent and continued dry weather. Mowing of dried, cured grass is restricted to before 10:00 a.m.  and after 8:00 p.m.  The mowing of dried grass is prohibited during Red Flag warnings and EXTREME fire danger periods.  These restrictions do not apply to the harvesting of agricultural crops or the mowing of green grass.

Low humidity, high temperatures, and dry brush create fire conditions that can spread rapidly, especially in rural areas where responses may be delayed by distance to travel.
