Salem Officer Shoots Suspect in Menacing Incident

Salem, Ore. — A suspect was injured late Thursday afternoon after being shot by a Salem Police officer.

At approximately 4:45 p.m., the dispatch center received a report of a man with a gun in the parking lot of the Popeyes Restaurant at 2595 Lancaster DR NE. The caller reported a man pointed the gun at a person and was also trying to stop drivers.

An officer in the area was flagged down by a witness and provided the suspect’s description. The officer located the suspect walking in the area of Coral AV and Wolverine ST NE. The suspect pointed what appeared to be a gun at the officer while the officer was still in his vehicle. The officer fired his weapon, injuring the suspect.

The suspect was transported for medical care with a non-life-threatening injury. The officer was not injured.

The Marion County Law Enforcement Officer Deadly Use of Force Plan under Senate Bill 111 has been initiated for this incident, and Oregon State Police (OSP) will be conducting the primary investigation in coordination with the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.

Per the use of force plan protocol, all further details concerning this investigation will be provided by OSP.
