Salem Council Considers Levy Choices

Posted on February 8, 2025
The Salem City Council will meet on Monday, February 10, at 6 p.m. to discuss whether to seek a 5-year operating levy on the May 20 ballot to support the library, parks, recreation services and Center 50 Plus.

A new staff plan proposes three levy options for the council to consider: two different tax rates for a levy on the May 20, 2025 ballot, or not to refer a levy to voters at that time. Or the council could come up with a different recommendation. The levy was one of the revenue-generating ideas proposed by a Revenue Taskforce in 2024 to help the City keep up with increasing costs of providing services.

Additionally, the council will:

  • Recognize Black History Month.
  • Transfer funds to cover an increase in liability insurance rates.
  • Seek federal funding for six Safe Routes to School projects in the Salem-Keizer area.
  • Apply for federal funding to plan the River Road South slide mitigation project.
  • Hold a public hearing about the Criterion Schoolhouse becoming a local historic resource.
  • Hear updates from the Salem Public Art Commission, Historic Landmarks Commission, and Salem Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.

Make sure to join the meeting to stay informed about these important issues!
