Wildfire Smoke, Drug Prices & Taking Responsibility – Newsmakers At Noon 7/16/26

Posted on July 16, 2026

Today’s Newsmakers at Noon covered everything from smoky skies over the Willamette Valley to healthcare policy, public safety, and the difficult choices facing Oregon’s largest city.

Wildfire season made its presence known as lightning sparked fires around the region, leaving many Oregonians waking up to hazy skies and the smell of smoke—a reminder that summer in the Pacific Northwest can change quickly.

We also revisited Portland’s ongoing struggle with homelessness, discussing criticism of city policies and whether years of spending have produced meaningful results. Denise recommended Lionel Shriver’s novel A Better Life, which explores the complicated realities of homelessness, good intentions, and personal responsibility through fiction that feels increasingly relevant.

Public safety was another major topic after bystanders stopped the attempted kidnapping of a 7-year-old girl at Portland’s Waterfront Park before police arrived. The incident prompted a broader discussion about emergency response times, self-reliance, and the reality that ordinary citizens are often the first people on the scene when seconds matter.

Our guest, Phil Kerpen, president of American Commitment, joined us to examine the future of prescription drug pricing under Medicare. Kerpen argued that the Inflation Reduction Act’s government price controls—and the Biden administration’s implementation of them—discourage pharmaceutical innovation by reducing incentives to invest billions of dollars in developing new medicines. He outlined several administrative changes he believes the Trump administration could make immediately to lessen the impact of the current program while pursuing broader market-based healthcare reforms.

Throughout the show, one theme kept resurfacing: whether the issue is healthcare, public safety, or homelessness, good intentions alone don’t guarantee good outcomes. Effective policy requires balancing compassion, accountability, innovation, and individual responsibility.
