Today’s Newsmakers at Noon celebrated service, sacrifice, and civic responsibility while tackling a few of the issues making headlines across Oregon.
Our first guest, Terry Scott, Executive Director of the B-17 Alliance, joined us to talk about this Saturday’s Lacey Lady Birthday Bash & Cruise-In at Salem’s McNary Field. We learned about the remarkable history of the iconic B-17 Flying Fortress, one of only 48 remaining in the world and one of just a handful being restored to fly. Terry shared updates on the restoration effort, what visitors can expect at the family-friendly celebration, and why preserving these historic aircraft helps keep the stories of the Greatest Generation alive for future generations.
We also welcomed Major Jason Goodard of the Oregon Army National Guard, who discussed today’s recruiting environment and the opportunities available to Oregonians considering military service. As a Dallas High School graduate who rose through the ranks to become an infantry officer, Major Goodard shared his own journey while explaining the Guard’s mission, the types of skills and backgrounds they’re looking for, and the many educational, leadership, and career benefits that come with serving both state and country.
The show also turned to Initiative Petition 28, the proposed measure that would ban hunting and fishing in Oregon. While supporters of hunting celebrated the measure’s recent setback during signature verification, Denise cautioned against becoming complacent. We discussed why the effort itself reveals a larger, long-term strategy by activists and why staying engaged remains just as important as celebrating temporary victories.
Throughout the program, a common thread emerged: preserving what matters—whether it’s protecting American history, investing in the next generation of military leaders, or remaining vigilant in defending Oregon’s outdoor heritage.
