Today’s Newsmakers at Noon welcomed Jane Lowery and Daylee Howard from Willamette Valley Bank for our monthly Community Calendar. September is packed with events around the Mid-Willamette Valley, and we highlighted some of the opportunities to get out, get involved and support the community.
On the political front, we looked at Gov. Tina Kotek’s reelection pitch, as her campaign points to its first-term record on housing, affordability and public safety. With Election Day getting closer, the bigger question remains: How will Oregonians grade the last four years?
A major change is also coming for Oregonians who purchase their own health insurance. The state is preparing to move away from the federal Obamacare marketplace and launch Explore Health Oregon, its own state-operated marketplace. We talked about the questions consumers should be asking: What will it cost, what happens to subsidies and – most importantly – what will it do to already expensive premiums?
We also touched on IP-19, an initiative that would allow Oregon grocery stores to sell liquor, and whether voters are ready to change Oregon’s longstanding system.
And, as always, we mixed in some history and fun: World Coconut Day, National Spalding Baseball Day and National Blueberry Popsicle Day, plus a trip through September 2 history – from the Great Fire of London and the end of WWII to Teddy Roosevelt’s “big stick,” the first ATM, Grease hitting #1 and Diana Nyad’s historic swim.
