On this episode of The Hope Dealer, Matt welcomes Aaron Burrell, a former gang member whose life was consumed by organized crime, drug trafficking, violence, and a desperate desire to follow in his father’s footsteps.
Growing up with a father incarcerated in federal prison, Aaron spent much of his life idolizing a man he barely knew. When they finally reunited, their relationship eventually pulled Aaron deeper into Oregon’s criminal underworld, where he became involved in manufacturing and distributing drugs, gang activity, and extreme violence. Aaron shares the devastating emotional toll of that lifestyle, including depression, fear, and the constant pressure to maintain a violent reputation.
Aaron also recounts his years in prison, his struggle to leave his old life behind, and a shocking courtroom confrontation that ultimately became a turning point in his journey. Through an unexpected legal appeal, a second chance, and a powerful encounter with Scripture – particularly Proverbs 19:21 – Aaron began to recognize God’s purpose for his life.
Matt and Aaron discuss the realities of organized crime in Oregon, the difference between fear and respect, and the transforming power of God’s mercy and grace. Aaron’s journey eventually led him to City Team, where a new chapter of his life began.
It’s a remarkable testimony of redemption, second chances, and the truth that no one is too far gone for Jesus Christ.
